A celebration with ancient Celtic roots (although it can be found under other names in different cultures) was celebrated at the end of winter, today in the heart of it.
Winter was harsh and greatly feared, food and firewood could be scarce, the season could be deadly for the weakest.
Imbolc, halfway between the winter solstice and the spring equinox, marked the end of these fears, the return of light and milder temperatures. It was then time to air, clean and purify houses and stables, and to plant the first seeds. The season was for renewal, for projections on the year to come.
The goddess Brigid was celebrated. Goddess of fire, mother of metallurgy and forging, but also of inspiration, change, wisdom and healing, goddess of water, education and learning. Brigid represents the young virgin, the mother and the old woman. She watches over births and accompanies new beginnings.
Protector of the home, Brigid's crosses are woven from rushes or straw in her honor and hung above doors.
Nowadays the celebration of Imbolc is still done, it is a time of introspection, of connection to oneself and to the cycle of nature. It is a time to purify one's home and purify oneself, to prepare for the end of winter and the beautiful days. For some it is also the celebration of Brigid and the protection of one's home.
